Aquaculture is one major component of the E3P project; fish ponds are considered as consumption wells for organic matter from pig farms. Such an association is already existing through the VAC system in Red river delta, but innovation transfer in fish production is one of the major concern for rural development in tropics. Thus, one workshop has been organized by CIRAD to present to fish farmers and local officers their experience in tropical aquaculture and the main key factors that allow a sustainable development. Philippines and Brazil are the two main examples to compare factors associated with the rapid increase of tilapia in fish ponds. Facing environmental constraints, integrated fish systems with pig production have been promoted in Brazil (Itajahi area) thanks to new market and its high yield performances but according strict regulation, strong relationships between producers, technicians and research; production model are based on integration with pigs. Information sharing, family mutual assistance, applied research, network based on local motivated stakeholders are the main explanation for fish production development in the Philippines.
