The beneficiaries are poor but productive low income farm Households (Male and Female). These farmers otherwise had no access to credit due to the unfavourable traditional Financial markets. Lambo farmers association are a group of peasant farmers in Kuncheni a farming village in the Jirapa Lambusie District of the Upper West Region of Ghana.

The secondary beneficiaries of this project will be the entire village and adjoining villages that will have access to improved breeds of pigs for multiplication, and protein in the local markets as the meat will be marketed locally.

Pig production could be a quick way of addressing poverty reduction in the rural community. It could be a ready source of livelihood for rural poor farmers. It could also serve as an economic way of providing animal protein in a relatively short time because of the comparatively short generation interval, high prolificacy and low production cost of pigs. The ability of pigs to convert agro-by-products and food residues into meat would be an advantage to the rural farmer who would spend less on feed resources. Pig manure could be beneficial to integrated animal and crop farming and pigs could serve as insurance for the future.

To assist 30 farmers (Lambo Farmers association) in 3 farmer groups in the village to establish a three-sow unit each, costing US$ 1 666.7 per unit. Each group would produce about 48 pigs a year from the three sows. The farmers in each group would work independently during the second year. Other interested farmers will then join one of the three groups to also produce and take home their own starter stock at the end of the year. They will also be assisted with basic farm implements as wheelbarrows, Wellington boots and Watering facilities to enable them sustain the farm. The groups will collaboration with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture at the District Assembly responsible for Livestock so as to acquire the necessary improved skills and methods of keeping pigs in the light of emerging challenges as the African swine fever menace.
