Beneficiary Group
Movement for the Promotion of Food Security was formed in June 2002 to promote national food production. The movement has about 140 members comprising 25 men, 60 women and 55 male and female youths who will manage the proposed project. The project will also benefit other people in Kpetema village and environs with a population of about 5000 people. The project will make pork available for sale within the community, which will provide good nutrition.
Background and Justification of Project
Kpetema village is located in Bumpeh Chiefdom, Bo District, Southern Sierra Leone. Inhabitants are mostly peasant farmers with very low income. 60–65% of the project target beneficiaries are women and children who are vulnerable groups. 50% of the membership are youths who are the potential working force in the society. Wild life is scarce and the population of domestic animals (goat, sheep, pigs and poultry) was significantly reduced as a result of the war. Communities are making their own efforts to restock and rebuild the animal population. The beneficiaries have decided to rear pigs as a source of protein and income. Pigs are prolific and easier to manage especially with regards to feeding.
Objectives of Project
The goal of the project is to increase protein source for improved nutrition in the community. The objective is to support the association to acquire inputs for the production of pigs. Specific inputs are construction materials for pig house and piglets.
